MUCH MISSED

We moved to West Wiltshire in August 2019, after over 30 years in Bristol where the Barbelka Norwegian Elkhounds had been based since 1992.
For the first time since 1997, In 2021 I had just two Norwegian Elkhounds, who were 14 1/2 and 12 1/2 years of age.
They are pictured in their glorious youth, in the Summer of 2009.

Sadly we lost our only breeding age girl 'Ridl' (Myka's Granddaughter) in March 2020.

Then in April 3 months short of her 13th birthday we lost 'Inka'

We lost Myka in July 2022, at 15 years 7 months.
NEVER FORGOTTEN

The dogs that are no longer with me, most have gone over Rainbow Bridge
You can click on their names to see on their individual pages my dogs Pedigrees, Health screening, show wins and other data.
Here are some more personal details about each of them!

Quite successful in the show ring, and an affectionate pet. The mother of my, ’Z’ and ’B2’ Litters. Very motherly of puppies, even those not her own.
Peni was a very forceful strong minded young lady, and pushed for the top rank at home when her grandmother Lexi gave up the spot. Unfortunately her Aunt Inka accepted her position with bad grace, and there were frequent squabbles between them, causing a strained atmosphere in the home pack.
I had hoped that as she matured and Inka got older these differences would settle, but not so.
In July 2019 just before we moved from Bristol I decided to let her go to live with a long time Elkhound owner who had just lost her dog and due to age wanted a mature adult, so with a heavy heart I let her go to be an only dog, queen of her household with no-one she could bully.

Born 16th February 2011

Inka’s daughter, conceived in the USA
Seventh generation resident at Barbelka

‘Perpetual Motion’ best describes this girl!
She was a very slow maturing girl, who was bored in the ring, loved shows, but not showing. She took time out of the ring , after winning two Limit classes, and Reserve Best Bitch at Southern Counties championship show, for her first litter the Barbelka ‘W’ litter born 19th September 2013. One of her daughters was shown a little.
Her second litter The Barbelka ‘A2’ Litter was born 3rd April 2016. A daughter Barbelka Aurora Knights of Cealdstan (Marcy) has been shown.
In January 2017 she went to live with the owners of her grandmother Lexi’s litter sister Signe, to console them after her loss.
She had been getting more and more withdrawn with her mother Inka’s and forceful cousin Peni’s regular squabbles. On her visits though always pleased to see us, she is eager to return home to be spoilt, and enjoys being top dog.

In 2021 she was joined by Granddaughter Isla - Cealdstan Artistic Mystic, litter sister of our Alys, and has returned to the show ring for occasional Veteran classes.

MYKA
20th December 2006 - 20th July 2022
A Lexi daughter. The 6th Generation at BARBELKA
Myka was not really a show girl. She grew up from the pup always on two legs to a very sensible girl. She really is very much a home girl, loving nothing better than playing with her half sister and enjoying the home comforts.
An exemplary and devoted Mum,
She produced three very nice litters of puppies typical of her very sweet nature. They are the Barbelka ‘O’, ‘R’ and ‘T’ litters. From the last we kept a little girl, Barbelka Topaz (Peni).

MISS PERSONALITY PLUS, A PEST AND A SWEETHEART ALL IN ONE ;)
Now this girl loved showing, and did very well from the start.
A Champion and her Junior Warrant at the tender age of 14 months.
She grew up to be a very affectionate show off. As far as she was concerned all visitors came to worship at her feet!
Like most Elkhounds she is a foody, and spends her time hoping for something in the kitchen, or hoping the birds drop something from the bird feeders.
She took to motherhood in her stride; After our eventful trip to the USA, in December 2010, with Airports snowed in, cancelled flights all over Europe and USA, returning via Belgium by air and channel ferry she produced out Barbelka ‘S’ Litter.
We kept her daughter Barbelka Szafir, the madcap ‘Safi’.
Another two daughters were shown a little in UK.
Barbelka Szept at Suchow (Rosie), and Barbelka Skandal at Vinelka (Zena), who had one litter for Sally Long’s Vinelka Norwegian Elkhounds.
Barbelka Ssmiech was exported to her Sire’s owners Ellyka Norwegian Elkhounds in the USA, where she was shown and bred from and produced a American champion son.
Her second litter the Barbelka ‘U’ Litter was born January 2013, and Barbelka Uwaga was shown and won a RCC with light showing.

5th May 2015 - 11th March 2020
Peni’s daughter.
Eighth generation resident at Barbelka

‘Ridl’ - was a slow maturing girl, not the biggest show-off, not inclined to be sweetly demure and ladylike, she had her rowdy moments.
In February 2019 she produced a nice litter,
the Barbelka ‘C2’ Litter .
Tragically we lost her just a year later in March 2020.

Well what about little Lexi. An enchanting, and very bright puppy, that took all things new in her stride.
A lot like her Mum and quite a bit like her Grandmother Kizi with an air of being ‘special’. I could see a lot of her Dad in her too.
She showed lots of promise and all I could do was hope she fulfilled it. She was a trooper travelling to Ireland for her very first show at 6 months, then at her first UK show she was Reserve Best Puppy in show. She won 16 out of 20 breed classes at Championship shows in 2004 and finished the year with her Junior Warrant and a RCC, having also won Puppy Stakes at one and a Puppy Group place at another on the way.
In 2005 she continued her winning record and won another RCC and then 2 CCs. In May 2006 she gained her 3rd and crowning CC to make her a champion!
She produced the next generation for Barbelka (The ‘M’ Litter) at the end of 2006 from her foreign liaison with a Norwegian dog living in Finland, where we journeyed in October. She took the four plane journeys in her stride, making herself quite at home with her beau in the snow.
One of the cute little girls stayed to keep the others company, bringing us up to four again , and the sixth generation since Elka.
In 2008 we kept another daughter Barbelka Nowinka from the Barbelka ‘N’ litter.
Members of her last litter (Barbelka ‘P’ Litter) that were in the UK and Australia looked very promising, in UK winning a RCC, and in Australia becoming a champion.

14th November 2001 - 20th July 2017

Imported into UK Quarantine for 6 months in January 2002

His Sire:

American & Canadian Champion Von Conrad's Cloud Chaser
His Mother:

American Champion Camalot's Leap Of Faith

This lovely boy was imported by myself as part of group of 4 friends, and lived with one of his other owners, but has a special corner of my heart.
I visited him several times each week throughout his stay in Quarantine, and admit to finding it very hard once he went to live with his ‘Missus’, Treena, as this meant I would only get to see him at shows. In his retirement he went to live with Georgina White (Treena’s daughter)
He always had a special welcome for me whenever I saw him, or he visited, and of course I had his and Jozi’s daughter Lexi.
He produced 8 litters of lovely puppies, in the UK, including my ‘I’ and ‘J’ litters, and a litter in Holland.
The first and second generations did well at UK and Irish shows, winning Best Puppy In Show awards, Puppy Groups, adult Group placing's, Best Puppy in Breed awards, also CC’s and RCC’s at Championship shows.
His first Grandchildren were born in 2005. His first UK Champions were crowned in 2006, and he also has a champion daughter in Australia.
Late 2006 he became a Great Grandfather, and his influence continues through his numerous descendants.

Jozi could be best described by words starting with ‘B’. The most polite ones would be Brash, Bold, and Beautiful.
Having been sold as a pup, and coming back as an unruly adolescent of 8 1/2 months. She had that stubborn “why should I” attitude, which made training a challenge.
She was an extremely loving and affectionate, people oriented girl, and that streak of naughtiness made her all the more appealing, and gave her that “look at me” air in the show ring!
I am proud of her achieving her UK title, the firast of my own dogs to do so.
She finally produced a litter of 4, at nearly 4 years of age, from which we kept a daughter, Lexi, my second champion!
I hoped the repeat of this combination of Jozi and Sir K born July 2005, would do well in the show rings in USA, Holland and Ireland as well as here in the UK, and I wasn’t disappointed with her Irish Champion son Barbelka Kaliber being the Top Elkhound in Ireland.
Her last litter produced by the Norwegian Import Vaesjan’s Martell produced a lovely Irish champion bitch Barbelka Lila, for the same owners. Her only daughter Ch/IR Ch Ennafort The One and Only became a Top Winner in the UK, being 10th Top show dog all breeds 2014..
In that litter there was also Barbelka Laser With Seasara who sired my ‘N’ Litter, that produced our Inka, who followed her Mother and Grandmother to her title..

Kizi was the second generation bred at Barbelka, and right from the off she acted as if she was special. She was a lively affectionate and co-operative girl, but among others of her own kind expects the respect she felt was her due, and was the Queen of my girls, having quietly deposed her Grandmother.
She did quite well in the show ring winning a RCC in 2002, though eclipsed by her daughter.
She had three litters, the ‘E’, ‘H’ and ‘J’ litters. In her first produced a Champion daughter, Jozi.
She was a gracious and regal lady to the end in August 2011 at nearly 14 years of age.

Left: at 3 months, and below with her first litter, showing clearly that superior air, that had made her the Queen among her canine family

Left: with her first litter, a very proud ‘Super Mum’ of Nine!
Right: Pictured with her last litter to Sir K (The ‘J Litter) May 2004.
Below: Kizi a few days before her death on 6th August 2011 just 8 weeks short of her 14th birthday.

This photo shows her sunny character.
My first home bred girl. A total foil to her mother, no illusions of Grandeur. When young she was a happy and mischievous pup, but hated anyone to be cross. As an adult she was the sort who loved to be cuddled, but had learnt after having to put up with her granddaughter , that it paid to stick up for yourself.
She had 3 litters of puppies, the Barbelka ‘C’,, ‘D’ and ‘G’ Litters. She had Champion children in Poland and Australia, and a son in the UK with 2 CC’s. She adored puppies and had always been the one to play with any pups no matter whose they were.
She died on 12/1/2006 as she had lived quietly not drawing any attention to herself, slipping away without anyone realising. It was a terrible shock as she had been in tip top health and had enjoyed an energetic romp in the Park only hours earlier.

Here she is on the left with her Great Granddaughter Lexi.
She was my first Elkhound and I brought her home at 11 1/2 weeks, when I had sadly just lost my first dog of another breed.
An independent character who liked to pretend that she was above all that mushy stuff, but complained bitterly when the younger ones crowded visitors, or got attention first. She abdicated her position as Queen of the Household to her Granddaughter, and was quite happy without the responsibility, but still had the respect of the others.
She was my foundation bitch, and had two litters of puppies, the Barbelka ‘A’ and ‘B’ Litters..
On the 1st of November 2005 to preserve her dignity and avoid suffering we had to let her go to ‘The Rainbow Bridge’.

Here on the left she is at 12 years old with her Great Great Granddaughter, and on the right a few weeks before her death at 13 1/2.

Pictured here when she was 3 years old, with puppy daughter Tula.
